Day Three – Zanesville, Ohio

Just short of Columbus is a nice campground named Wolphie’s. The weather is good and I organized everything I have last night so why not camp out. There’s a group of bikers here so I grabbed the lightest equipment I have and walked down to their site. The shoot was everything I hoped it would be. I’ve been across the country twice before on bikes. Those trips were about the ride and the places I experienced for the first time. I realized this crossing is about the people and their photographs. Tonight’s shoot was the first relaxed time I had behind the camera on this trip. I worked through the last two hours of light, missing dinner tonight I’ll have a good breakfast tomorrow.

I used one 580EX II speedlite bounced into a 43″ umbrella and one 430EX II zoomed to 105 and aimed directly on the face from twice the distance of the umbrella, both on full power. I’m really pleased with these pictures. It just took seven minutes to upload this one – ouch. I’ll come back tomorrow and upload the rest the first chance I get (with a faster connect).

Shakespeare Garden

Chung and I spent an hour at the wonderful Shakespeare Garden in GG Park last night at 6:00. I was taking new pictures for her web page. She’s a great photographer who specializes in weddings. She shoots all natural light and is able to get wonderful intimate pictures. This was her turn to be in front of a lens. To throw her a curve I used a flash for a few of the shoots. Yes we did have that wonderful light that only a fogged in San Francisco can offer.

Kirby Cove

Had an enjoyable, if not cool, afternoon shooting the Bridge and City from Kirby Cove. Wonderful location and beautiful views.

Wine Tasting

Had a very fun day in Napa with great friends celebrating Johnny’s birthday.  It did bring up some interesting problems with concern to photography. It was dark in the restaurant, it was very dark at the wine tasting, and dark again at the restaurant. So a lot of shaky throw aways and many 8 second exposures. I found that I could keep the camera steady longer than people were willing  to stand still. I want to go back to Mustard and take pictures in the open kitchen and I want to be able to see sunsets over the country side.

365

I’m finally changing over from film to digital. Shooting Nikon from the 70′s I now find myself with friends that have Canon DSLRs. So I got a basic Canon body and a good glass. Realizing that the way to be comfortable with the equipment is to use it, the 365 project was started. Invited friends. Having fun.

Name – GaryGoose – Why?

When you have a niece and nephew that constantly said to you as they grew up “You silly Goose”, it leaves a scar. Not a bad scar but a small mark all the same. OK a teeny spot.
